Once your website Is built you are going to want to make sure it is ranked up high up in search engines for your main keywords, so that people searching your keywords will be more likely to click the link to your website.
There are many simple factors to take into consideration when applying search engine optimization such as putting your keywords in your header, underlining keywords, making keywords bold and using Meta tags.
The main thing you should focus on when editing your pages HTML is making sure your Title contains your keyword(s). This is a crucial thing to get right and will be picked up by search engines as it is the text that search engines link to you from.
Try and make sure your website is CSS and HTML valid, to do this use the W3 validation websites XHTML Validation - CSS Validation. Google prefers web pages to be validated to W3 standard so try to make sure all of your pages are 100% valid.
Use the SEO Doc Mini-Tester Tool to check what you need to change in your Meta tags, title, keyword density etc. This tool is very helpful, try to aim for at least 38/40 point in order to be adequately optimized. It will tell you things like your pages keyword density is to low, you fix this by using your keyword(s) as many times as possible and relevant.
There is also a way to get your website images brought up on Google Image search, this is done by editing all of your images Alt text to contain keywords about the image and webpage it is on.
A major part of search engine optimization is generating back links from other websites with your keywords as the hyperlink text e.g. Google AdSense Guides. The keywords I am trying to “plug” are ‘Google AdSense Guides’.
The more successful websites you get linking to you using specific keywords, the higher up your website will rank in search engines for that term.
Posting your URL on blogs or in signatures of forums you use is also a good way to back link.
Ask people with pages related to yours to link to your website in return for you linking to their website and also submit your website to well known web directories.
If you have an idea for an article that you can write which is similar to your website niche then you could submit it to an article directory such as Digg.
Finally, you must submit your websites to search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista and any other search engine or directory you come across.
